5 Ways to Cold Weather-Proof Your Makeup

Applying makeup during the wintertime can feel like a lost cause, especially when it’s raining or snowing. There’s nothing more annoying than spending an hour on your makeup and having it ruined by midday. Since Elevate Salon Institute (ESI), Royal Oak is located in a place where it gets pretty chilly outside, we know a thing or two about cold weather-proofing makeup! Here are a few tips that can help prevent makeup casualties during wintertime.

Perfect a Winter Skin Care Routine

If you want your makeup to last throughout a cold and maybe wet day, you need to get on top of your daytime/nighttime skin care routine. When you wake up with dehydrated skin, makeup isn’t going to stay on your face. Cleansing your face is crucial in the evening and the morning. Make sure to use a hydrating cleanser so you’re not drying out your skin. Once your skin is clean it’s time to moisturize. As you look for a wintertime moisturizer, think about thickness. A thicker, richer cream will lock in moisture during harsh, cold weather. Winter is also the perfect season to add oils and serums to your routine, as these products add an extra hit of rich, nourishing hydration. Beautiful makeup starts with skin care. Get your routine on lock before you even worry about applying makeup.

Ditch the Matte Foundation

As much as you might love your matte foundation, during the winter it’s not an ideal formulation. When the air is cold, your skin tends to dry out and applying matte foundation isn’t doing it any favors. Dewy foundations often include SPF, oils, and other nourishing ingredients that protect your skin from harsh winter air. Just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean that your skin is safe from the sun’s rays. They’re easy to apply and leave just as flawless of a finish as a matte, full-coverage foundation.

Opt for Waterproof

Snow, ice, rain, and wind are all things to consider when applying makeup during winter. Switching out your products for waterproof versions is the best way to keep products on your face throughout the day. Waterproof makeup isn’t only limited to mascara, though you’ll definitely want to get one of those to prevent the dreaded raccoon eyes. Waterproof primer, foundations, concealers, eyeliners, and lipsticks are available to purchase at any beauty retailer. This way your entire look can stay flawless all day long, no matter what the weather throws at you!

Roll With the Rosy Cheeks

You know that flushed look you get from spending time outside during winter? Use that rosiness to your advantage! A slightly flushed face looks healthy, fresh, and full of life. You can even play up the look by adding some blush to your cheeks. We’d recommend a cream or liquid formulation during winter, as it’s more hydrating than powder. Whether you choose a pale pink, deep rose, or something in between, a pink flush will liven up your entire face.

Mix Oil Into Your Products

Want to up the moisture levels of your products? Try mixing in a little bit of oil. This will help combat dryness, dullness, and flakiness. Adding oil also changes the texture of your foundation, making it sheerer and easier to blend. The fluidity of the foundation also means you’ll have to use less product to get coverage. The best oils to mix into foundation are argan and tea tree because they contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. Instead of buying a whole new foundation, save a little money and try adding a few drops of oil!
